I'm not sure that the rivets popping after the sub goes past maximum safe diving depth were supposed to be from the hull. Plenty of systems have to go through the pressure hull to operate the boat (engine cooling, pressurized "bouyancy" air, etc.) and I believe that these were what was zooming about the interior of "Das Boot." Or, rivet heads might shear off due to torsional loads from the hull shrinking because of the pressure of the sea outside. I don't really know, I've never been aboard a submarine, so maybe I'm just blowing smoke.
