I'm only speculating here but I'm thinking maybe Paramount was acting as the film distributor while LucasFilm will produce.

That's all I can come up with. Or...

Maybe Paramont DOES own the rights. I dunno. That might be the case... I know Lucas was that "powerful independent force" because he happened to obtain the merchandising and sequel rights to Star Wars back when those rights weren't worth much.
