Firstly, I know just what you mean about that Denholm Elliot reading of that line. I think ol' Denny intended Marcus to know that Indy was just being used as a stooge for the US Guv. (and yet he trusted Indy's ability to retrieve the prize and hoped that they would get some chance to analyze it).
Secondly, he says "wiped clean by the wrath of god".
"Wrath" coming from the olde English "wraeththu" (anger).
"For I am a jealous people", and all that; wrath being divine retribution for sin... thus the raison d'etre for the Ark - a place to hold 'dem Commandments, given as a rulebook to Moses and the Israelites by a pissed off deity angry that his favorite tribe was screwing around with golden idols.
Didn't you guys ever go to Sun... nah...
Gotta love that Old Testament Yaweh; he didn't take crap from nobody!
Much prefer him to that wishywashy goodie two shoes New Test. interpretation.
