I am a professional archaeologist, too, and the relevance of what we do is something I sometimes struggle with -- I make an effort to public archaeology (talking to school groups, community groups etc) as well as academic activities. I have filmed a couple of documentaries, one which came out last year on Discovery Channel and one to be released on the Travel Channel this year, I think, so that helps get the word out there. I essentially help recreate history where it was lost, and I hope there is value in this. I know that some of the indigenous groups with which I worked in Central America were very interested in knowing more about the lost history of their ancestors.

I think the public is interested, in general, so at least it fills that need.
