I think people have some kind of fear that Indy will be replaced somehow, so they degrade every aspect of the potential competition in order to keep Indiana Jones above the rest. At the same time, the rest of the world could care less and watch movies for the entertainment value. This is what happens when you become so obsessed with a fantasy character/movie that it ends up controlling your life- everything becomes judged in relation to the obsession.
