Indy intended to get the Hovitos idol for Marcus' museum. Perhaps
Indy intended to double-cross Barrancha and Sapito and make off with
the idol by running to the Jock's plane, or perhaps he intended to pay
off Sapito and Barrancha and hightail it to the plane. Getting the idol
and traveling back to their starting point with Sapito and Barrancha
would be risky considering how treacherous they both were.

Perhaps the novelization or the script gives clues. Anyone?

We can rationalize the biplane away as much as we want. Having an
escape biplane a few hundred yards away is exactly in keeping with
the spirit of 1930s serials. The hero was always near death at the
end of every episode (often actually shown dying). The next episode
picked up the storyline showing the hero cheating death in implausible
and not very novel ways. Energy and excitement, not deep writing,
carried the serials along.
