The idol is interesting as the popular consensus seems to be that Indy should get to retrieve it in Indy 4- as he was given the chance in Infernal Machine. But aside from the sentimental value for fans of Raiders, why would Indy really care? It wasn't something he'd been after his whole life, ala the Cross of Coronado, and it also wasn't the only time he "lost" an artifact. If you think about it, the only thing he actually got to keep was the Cross of Coronado. (Out of the main 6 artifacts in the 3 films.)

The other interesting idea is that Indy beating the Nazis to the Ark didn't accomplish anything- as they would have still met their end via the Wrath of God. But perhaps it was Indy's battle of good vs. evil that formed the catalyst for the power of the Ark to be unleashed. Otherwise, I think the Ark would've just been a box of sand that the Nazis would've put in a warehouse for further study.
