: A good quality whip, if properly taken care of, can last enough years that you will one day want to pass it on to your son as an heirloom. Whips can be made quite short, but then you might as well just get a quirt or they can be made to grossly exaggerated lengths. The best length is between 8 and 10 feet. Whips are made out of many different types of leather, but the really "First Quality" whips are made out of kangaroo hide. Whips, if not properly used, can do a great deal of damage, not only to the wielder but to other around the wielder, property, etc. Great care must be exercized at all times. Know what is around you and what is overhead. Costs have a wide range as well. Some of David Morgans' whips are in the $500.00 Plus range, while a good 'roo hide whip from Australia can run around $215.00, and that cost goes for a two tone as well as a single color 9 foot, 16 strand, balanced handle whip. Hope that this helps you somewhat. I have some contact information, if you would like additional info. J R Miller
