I’ve always leaned towards the story line that kinda goes:

Post WWII excavations around the Sphinx leading to revelations about pre-Egyptian (Atlantean?) civilizations and technologies that fuels a story line of a race between the West and the Soviet bad guys. This results in a storyline that takes us from Egypt to South America (one proposed, highly unlikely put attractive from an Indy perspective location for Atlantis) in a race to secure said ancient technology that could be used to build an ultimate weapon of mass destruction, blah, blah, blah… Hey, maybe Indy can revisit the hideous little chachapoyan idol from Raiders, ala the way he did the Ark in the catacombs of Venice…

“Ah, Venice…”
