Walther is German, and if I'm not mistaken, we can see Nazis toting a P-38 model in LC, mainly during the tank scene.
The British jsut came fascinated with them because they wouldn't jam like the Beretta's they had, and the "update" American CIA had sworn by them.
Personally, I don't see why Bond still carries a PPK. Better pistols than that have been put into service since 1962, I'm sure.
