Not the light trap again!

I always assumed that the people weren't supposed to worship the idol. I figure that the Idol Temple was, in effect, the Holy of Holies for the Hovitos (or their forefathers), and only the priests would be able to navigate the temple's traps when they need to appease or converse with the Goddess.
As for that light trap, I have no idea how that would work. I've heard the light-sensitive plant theory, and it makes as much sense as anything I could think up. Unless it was magic...
