Personally, I don't believe the facings would correct this problem. I believe the smaller teeth, as you point out, are the key to the problem. My old Avirex A-2 has no facings, but does have the larger teethed zipper, and it doesn't snake at all. My brass zipper on my FS Expedition doesn't either, and once again, no facings.
