Ark of the Covenant Question

Back in 1982, the Stanford Research Institute was applying for a permit to use sonar and other geologic equipment to map out all the tunnels underneath Jerusalem, and more specifically underneath the Temple Mount. One of their reasons was to search for the Ark of the Covenant. They also wanted to publish thier findings. Does anyone know if they were allowed to do it and if they have published anything?
