The Last Crusade: Something I've been dying to figure out!

Hey all?
I'm so glad I found this forum, as I watched The Last Crusade for like, the 100th time the other night and found myself asking the same question I always ask when I watch this movie.
Towards the end, when Indy is going through the first of the three steps to reach the grail, (the one where only "the penetant man will pass"), when he realizes he has to kneel, and then he rolls forward when he sees that big slice and dice thing, the camera flashes to a shot of a man's hands tying or pulling some rope (presummably the rope that controls the lovely slice-your-head-off disc).
My question is: whose the guy in control of this?
It's obviously not the knight, so I'm thinking, is it one of the guys who is part of that group whose job it is to protect the grail?
If anyone knows the answer to this, it'd be eternally grateful, it's been bothering my forever.
