in Phantom Menace, they need to have a way to separate Obi-Wan from the fight, or Qui-Gon wouldn't have gotten tired and so easy to kill. And Qui-Gon needed to be killed off (for continuity's sake) so Obi-Wan can train Anakin. I agree the force fields may be a weak excuse, but I'm not sure how else the separation would've taken place.
