: What are the early fictional origins of the Indy character and adventures? What are Lucas'/Kasdan's influences in regards to early comic book, television or B-movie characters and classic serials? Thanks. belloq

Good question. I always felt that Indy owes a lot to the old Saturday
morning serials from the 30's and 40's. Many were later broadcast on
Saturday mornings in the 50's when George Lucas was growing up. I'm
sure he must have watched them as a kid. From a historic perspective,
Indy seems to be based on Hiram Bingham and Sir Richard Burton. Both
were adventurers who dabbled in archaeology, back when it was a game
of who could steal what first. Just my two cents.
