Look at MK's Raider's fedora collage. Side views show the hat as lower slightly on the front than back. These are shots from the movie. I think the explanation is that Indy wears his hat back most of the time. From the side, the hat looks taller on the front. This is only because of the angle Indy is wearing the hat. Examine screen captures carefully and it is pretty clear.
