The Mummy came out as a Special Edition DVD in late 99, and it was loaded with extras. It was hardly what I would consider an early DVD. I'd say extras were very much in demand a mere two years ago- remember the Bond box set? Now, I agree that those early DVD's were bare-bones, but you'd have to go back to early-mid 98 to find those titles.
