All work and hiking boots need some mileage on them before they begin to feel really comfortable. The 405 will stretch out a bit over time but they should not hurt your feet. You will probably find that the laces will stretch out long before the boot will. It would be best to check in with Alden about sizing on the shoes before you get them dirty. Rumor has it that Alden recently switched the leather used to make the 405 boot. The new boot is reported to have darker leather and a 60" boot lace vs. the older boot which had orange tint to the leather and a 45" boot lace. Perhaps Alden removed some of the leather off the sides of the shoes as a cost savings measure resulting in a longer lace and different fit. Pecards leather dressing help a lot with the break in period on the shoes. If you do switch laces, I have found the Chippewa wax boot laces will fit the Alden 405 but they are quite snug under the metal lace holders at the top of the shoe. The extra support provided by the Chippewa laces prevents the flimsy little tabs from getting bent if you use the boots for rough work or serious hiking. Unfortunately, do not look quite as rakish as the standard Alden flat lace. Best of luck with your new investment.

Best regards
