I think it's Lucas' revenge for all that Phantom Edit nonsense. Lucas has a pretty good twisted streak in him. He's knows exactly what kind of stuff these guys are wanting/expecting...dramatic, important, meaningful. He also knows he can do whatever the hell he wants, it's not like they won't go see the film.
