Good examples of movies that follow fairly closely to the books are those wriiten by Alistair McLean, "Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navorone, Force 10 from Naverone (Harrison Ford is in this one), Breakheart Pass, etc. That is because Alistair McLean wrote the screenplay as well as being the original author. And if you check out the first 3 Bond Films, they're really not all that far off from the original novels by Ian Fleming. As far as why other movies differ so much from the book, you can't make a Tom Clancy novel into a movie without cutting corners, or you're going to have a 14 hour movie. And, unfortunately, for others, it's because the masses have settled for FX, explosions, and gratuitous sex (not that there is necessarily anything WRONG with gratuitous sex), rather than plot and character development.
