Although I'm not a Christian, one aspect of Raiders that was unconvincing
was how Indy was never transformed by what he experienced. Even
after witnessing the wrath of God first-hand, he never had any kind of
spiritual "awakening,' it just seemed he was ready to get back to
business as usual. Also, the movie seemed to "straddle the line" between
genuine respect for the Ark's powers ("an army that posseses the Ark...
is invincible.) (moment of grave concern all around..) AND, more of a
"dismissive" attitude "I'm talking about a find of incredible archeological
significance, you're talking about the Bogey Man!" There's
a little inconsistency there.
At least in LC, Indy is transformed by what happens, or seems
to be, judging by his expressions. And even if a viewer is not religious, if
a movie depicts the power of God, then it's more dramatically
satisfying to have characters who respond in a significant way
to something so awe-inspiring, and don't just "shrug it off." Cue
Yul Brynner..."Moses's God....IS God." 'nuff said.
