There's a simple answer to the whole question:
It's part of the adventure formula.
Nearly every adventure film has involved romance of some kind. Granted, there are ones that go against the rules, but it's rare that they succeed. Any movie of any kind should have some kind of a romantic subplot. It's just in the formula.
