: Well, it was George Lucas' initial idea to make him a playboy (getting money from the old artifacts he finds, spending them in New York), but Spielberg objected. While it is not so visible in the movies, the playboy element is still there.

Yeah, the agreement was that they wouldn't portray that aspect of Indy in Raiders, but in Lucas's mind, at least, it was still there. There is a scene in the original script where Marcus comes to Indy's house to tell him he got him the assignment (to go after the ark), and when he arrives, there is a woman described as a "flapper" (even though this is a decade too late for that, really), in a negligee, and he has interrupted Indy's tryst.
