I remember John Williams saying that the theme from 'Land of Hope and Glory' was a great inspiration, especially for the main theme from SW, but I just checked, and that's a silent movie. It doesn't say what music they played along that movie.
I'm sure that Max Steiner was an inspiration for Williams. Also, I think I hear some Strauss in Williams's work.

: I am not a bog classical fan, but do you guys now any of the artists that Williams used as an insperation for the Raider's March and other songs. Some of my more cultured friends claim that Williams is just a copycat. What do you guys know about that?
