Hi, how are you all doing? I love those novels with alternate histories, and parallel dimensions. And this just kind of came to me . . .

DECEMBER 3 2019, LUCASFILM and PARAMOUNT PICTURES have just announced plans for "INDY 19", there are no clues as to the storyline of the forthcoming picture, but what is confirmed is that Corey Carrier is once again playing Indy. This long running adventure series has appeared almost with clockwork regularity since 1981 when Harrison Ford played the intrepid adventurer / archaeologist in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The film was a raging success and was followed up in 1984 by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Lucas announced that it would be at least five years before the next Indy movie. However things began to sour for Lucasfilm. All the profits from Return of the Jedi were lost when a well known toy company sued Lucasfilm, claiming that there were just too many similaritied between the Ewoks and the then popular Care Bears. This coupled with the abysmal box office reciepts of Howard the Duck, Tucker, and Willow forced Lucas to release Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade one year later in 1985. Harrison Ford was joined by the popular actor John Forsythe (Blake Carrington in Dynasty) as his father. The film performed well in the box offive and was swiftly followed in 1987 by Indiana Jones and the Lost Continent.

Unfortunately, Spielberg was becoming increasingly bored with the high adventure exploits of Indiana Jones and decided not to direct any more. Harrison Ford was also becoming disenchanted with the role and announced that he would appear in one more and then never again. In 1989 Indiana Jones and the Ark of Miracles was released and suffered appaling box office. People went expecting to see the Ark of the Covenant but were instead treated to the search for the remains of Noah's Ark. This prompted the European release of the film being changed to Raiders of the Other Ark. It performed well, particularily in France, and ensured that even without Ford and Spielberg the show would go on.

In 1991, George Clooney appeared in Indy 6, and was slated as perhaps one of the least appropriate choices for Indiana Jones in the entire world. However, Indiana Jones and the Diamonds of Venus was not a good film and even the presence of Harrison Ford could have saved it. Clooney, now a well known superstar, was not an experienced enough actor to carry of the role in a turgid script full of banal one liners, hammy villains and bright neon lights. Director Joel Schumacher was released from contract and never directed an Indy film again.

In 1993, Harrison Ford was persuaded once more to return as Indy in the seventh movie in the series and this revitalised the franchise. Indy 7 was a barnstorming motion picture with glorious humour and bone crunching action sequences and audiences were delighted. Unfortunately it was only a one off. Ford said never again and stayed true to his word.

In 1995 Tom Selleck, earmarked for the role in 1981 took over. His portrayal was very different. Out went the fedora and leather jacket in camed the Hawaiian shirts and baseball cap. Selleck created a very humourous and mischevious Indy and younger audiences loved his portrayal. Older audiences went to see the films, but when asked they preferred the older grittier Harrison Ford movies.

Selleck played Indy for twelve years. Appearing in seven Indy movies he has been accused of turning Indiana Jones into a parody of the character concieved by Lucas and Spielberg all those years ago. But his tenure did establish Indy as one of the cinematic mainstreams.

Selleck left, feeling he was too old and in stepped Bruce Campbell. This actor wanted to take Indy back to his roots and turned the character into a humourless and gritty single minded obssessive. Fans were surprised, after watching Campbell play humour very well in the Evil Dead movies and his countless tv appearances this grim faced character was more akin to Fred C Dobbs in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre than Indiana Jones. Campbell made two Indy films and the mutually agreed with Lucas to leave the part.

Steven Spielberg, now languishing in TV Hell after his disasterous and bizarre decision to make Saving Private Ryan in the same style as he made 1941, reconciled with Lucas and in 2016 he directed Indy 17. Jake Loyd, who had appeared in the television series The Young Darth Vader Chronicles in the 1990's stepped into the role of Indy and many people said that it was his presence that saved the series. Indiana Jones and the Eye of Gold was an instant money maker and has succesfully taken Indy straight into the 20's.

Pure speculation I admit, but look what happened to Bond. So lets just be thankful for what we have got and whatever we get in the future. Let me know what you think.
