I couldn't agree with you more! It disturbs me that some
moviemakers believe that "fast editing = excitement." More often than not it's just jarring. On the other hand, Spielberg is a master of action that "flows" from one camera shot to the next with kinetic energy. There are judicious fast cuts, but also more long-held shots as well. This seems to be true regardless of the editor he's
working with, and you can see it in Raiders, Duel, or even a
"lesser" effort like The Sugarland Express. I wish more filmmakers would study this so we could have action sequences that are exhilarating rather than simply nerve-jangling.
