Supposedly the Ark contained more than just the stone tablets...

: : .... The sand in the Ark. It's always puzzled me as to what it actually was. Was it supposed to be the remains of the Commandment tablets? I know they would not have disintegrated, but this is Hollywood here;) Or were the tablets removed at some point long ago for safety and replaced with sand to simulate the weight?
