Temple pilots

In Temple when the pilot and the copilot decide to jump ship, what were they thinking? Why did they jump out there? They could have at least waited until they were closer to a populated area. When they reached the ground they would be in the same hostile territory that Indy and friends ended up in when they landed. What a couple of knuckleheads! Does anyone know anything about what happened to these characters after they left the plane?
