These archaelogists belonged to the SS Forschungsgemeinschaft Ahnenerbe (SS Heritage Research Group), which was founded by Heinrich Himmler and two other Nazi stooges in '37. Himmler (played by Ronald Lacey in LC) was president, and there were 40 science departments in this organization.
The original purpose of the group was researching German ancestry and anything related. Due to WWII, Ahnenerbe shifted more towards "useful" research such as meteorology and even "medical" experiments in concentration camps.
