I pondered lonely as an Ark

I pondered lonely as an Ark
That's buried in deep under sand and tombs,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of archaeologists;
Beside the asps, beneath the Sphinx,
Impenetrable and solemn in the waste.

Continuous as the searchlights that shine
And gleam on the road to Tanis,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margins of this site:
Ten thousand Nazis saw I at a glance,
Tossing their potato mashers in explosive dance.

Indy Jones beside me drove; but they
Cut-off the fleeing Jones in glee:
A pharoah could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed---and burned---but little thought
What fame that Jones to me had brought:

For oft, when in my warehouse I lie
In vacant or in dusty mood,
That chase will flash upon that inward eye
Which is the numerbed crate of solitude;
And then my mercy seat with pleasure fills,
And adventures with the daffodils.
