What are two characteristics that are significant when taking a look at Indy's neurosis?

He hates authority (Nazis surely stand for authority, and the name Indy might as well stand for "Independent") and has an obsession (hunting the elusive).

Why does he hate authority? It has to do with the relationship to his father. Henry was a negligent father and husband, and Indy blames Henry for Mom's death. Ironically, Indy has developed his own obsession which seem to stand in the way when it comes to his relationship with woman - all that adventuring gives opportunity for plenty male bonding, though...

When in grave danger, or when confronted with a serious issue, Indy likes to regress. He uses baby talk and utters incomprehensible lines throughout his adventures. Even his name is a reference to his boyhood and his best friend, a dog. By doing that he goes back to a time when things were easier, not to say anal, and when he didn't have to worry about being castrated by Daddy just because he happend to love Mommy. I bet Indy's snake phobia and problems with women are rooted in here as well.

What about Indy's obsession, the hunt for artifacts?

Indy resorts to sublimation. Not only does he what his father has done in the past (he neglects his personal life), but Indy has channeled his libido (He never seems to get to the act itself) into a useful endeavor (Saving artifacts) by transforming the instinctually gratifying (Running, jumpng, falling, shooting off his guns) into something socially useful (Give the museum what it needs).

But what does it all mean? ;)
