Okay, okay, I'll knock it off now - of course I've read the book. What I like
about the opening chapter is the whimsical child-like tone to the writing, like Tolkien
was simply continuing The Hobbit (which, in essence, he was, since LOTR
was intended to be its "sequel."). Then of course, the story gets more serious and
heavy (not too mention DELICIOUSLY scary and ominous) as it progresses. I'm
glad that Tolkien didn't decide to go back to the opening chapter and rephrase it
(to fit the seriousness and epic scope)
with some-such "For it came to pass in those ancient days, that a halfling in an
undisturbed corner of the world would be chosen by fate to..." or whatever. I like
the blatant contrast in tones. And the other writing style is what burdens The
Silmarillion
(I'm still working on that book; I'm at about page 3).
