This article has a few more details than the one mentioned in our earlier discussion of the Taliban's destruction of Afghan history and artifacts.

It looks like they want to create a 1:10 scale model and then restore the original site. The Afghan government is planning "an international conference in late April or early May to assess whether and how to rebuild the statue."

I'm not sure what the point is now. Collect what was spirited away by antique dealers and what original bits and pictures you can find and put them in a museum.
