Some of them were actually made back then (and remade later):

Modern Times
The Great Dictator (Anybody remember Chaplin?)
My Man Godfrey
Madam Satan (by Cecil B. DeMille) - it has a Zepplin in it!
Little Caesar (The era of the gangster film has begun)
The Public Enemy (Cagney, more gangsta stuff)
And some adventure movies:
Lost Horizon
King Kong
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Mummy
Tarzan
Captain Blood
Island of Lost Souls
Mutiny on the Bounty
China Seas

Lots of escapist (and propganda too) stuff can be found among movies that deal with then current problems and issues. Just look at all those screwball comedies I didn't list.

PS: Censorship was still a hot issue in the 30's. Religious organizations, backed by William Randolph Hearst, pressured the movie industry.
