In most movies the protagonist reacts, but rarely acts. Indy acts all the time. He can be very impulsive, and he makes it up as he goes along. That's atypical and makes him more interesting than the average hero.
As for Indy being a humanitarian, I'm not so sure (At least if we look only at Raiders). Remember when Indy left Marion in Belloq's slimy hands to go after the ark?
