Sallah was just waxing metaphoric with that "steel beast" thing. If he really thought it was an alloy creature, he would have instead said "AIEEEEEEEEE!"
Maybe he had a stroke or something after the excitement of Raiders and had to relearn everything. Maybe 2 more years of putting up with Fayah's b*tching about animals running all over the place drove him nuts. Maybe learning the truth about Marion Ravenwood's abortion sent him into an existential state. Maybe he caught the same mentally debilitating virus that Marcus obviously had. Maybe the screenwriters just thought they were being cute.
At least when he screamed he didn't break glass like Mrs. Spielberg.
Boy, I'm looking forward to hearing that again.
