Weren't they singing when hoisting sails on tall ships? The catchy rythm made the labor smoother and more effortless and a real shared - not to say "bonding" - experience. That's also why Ben Hur was singing while paddling that big rowboat. Does the same go for digging?

: The story goes that Woolley encouraged his workmen to sing Phonecian boatmen's songs while they dug at Ur. It's said he thought it added to the atmosphere and exoticism of digging the site. Hyperbole or not, it's bound to have inspired the sunset digging scene.
