This isn't against his character at all. First he was trying to get the golden idol in Raiders for a museum.
And he went to Washington trying to get the ark for the museum.
In "temple" I think that he got a little more emotional involved than typically and it stopped him from his
normal response of "get it to a museum"
Okay so you still don't believe me? Well, then let's say that in the case of the cross it went back to his youth
and touched a cord with his little remaining idealism left over from his youthful idea of archeology.
