Apparently, Virgil was viewed as quite a crackpot. Spent a lot of time in the Middle East digging around in a cave. He'd become convinced that he'd discovered the place where the Levites had hidden the Ark before the Babylonian invasion.

My understanding, however, was that he'd died in the 70's.

Whether he's actually the basis, or a basis, or even if Lucas had ever even heard of him... I have my doubts. But I recall hearing a lot of pissing and moaning about how Raiders was making fun of this "devout man." Came from a lot of the James Irwin crowd (speaking of crackpots).
