In my opinion, the dumbest thing that Lucas did with Episode I was- not Jar Jar- but his attempt to explain the Force. This goes back to my comment about it feeling too much like a 'conscious effort'.

Everyone agrees about all the mythological stuff in the trilogy, and how much of it was likely an unconscious influence by Lucas' reading of Joseph Cambell's work.

But, his explanations of the Force often cause you to stop and wonder, 'Did Lucas really grasp everything he was talking about here?', 'Was he drawing on some deep understanding of world religions when he wrote this?'

Then you watch Liam Neeson talking about 'midichlorians'(sp?), and it kinda answers it for you.
