I get the impression that Lucas either wants to go out with a bang, ending both series the same summer...or else Indy will likely get bumped up to Summer 2004 sooner or later.

It's a little odd that Lucas would want to wait until the year before Episode III (when he's heavy into trying to finish it for a summer release) to begin work on it. (Besides, Indy 4 in `04 is catchier.)
