You're in the right city to become a consulting detective; San Francisco's famous for fog too, right? And don't bother with a deerstalker, most of Paget's illustrations of Holmes show him bareheaded or wearing a gentleman's silk top hat. Although in one memorable story (Cardboard Box was it?) he is shown wearing a smart and rakish straw boater. And don't bother with a meerschaum; Holmes only ever mentions smoking a briar stem. Except for his brief foray into cigarettes (in Golden Pince Nez), that is. Pointless historical trivia: in Victorian US cities, men who smoked cigarettes were considered effeminate. Real men smoked pipes or cigars. This changed after WWI, when trench warfare (I'm bringing it back on topic!) made smoking cigars and pipes difficult (if not impossible).

PS Holmes (almost) used a whip in one story. He used a riding crop as a weapon in The Speckled Band.
PPS Indiana Jones 4? I can't wait!
