I saw this on a list of news stories from the AIA. Since the URL may not remain long, I will post the entire story.

Holy Grail link to sub mystery

A GERMAN submarine which may have breached wartime defences on the Clyde could be linked to the Nazis' search for the mythical Holy Grail, a writer claimed today.

Nigel Graddon has written articles for historical journals and is now asking Telegraph readers for help in researching a war biography which could include the U-boat incident.

He said the Ministry of Defence has consistently rejected reports that a U-boat got through the Cloch Boom in the Firth of Clyde on 12 February 1940 and was attacked by destroyers.

One version of the story is that a destroyer tried to ram the sub and it ran aground.

Another is that two destroyers dropped depth charges, windows on either side of the river were shattered, and next day large quantities of dead fish were found on the shore.

Mr Graddon said: "I have subsequently learned from local residents that German sailors' hats with trailing ribbons were also found ashore the morning after the attack. And U-boat experts say such hats were worn on shore duty.

"I have also learned that a serving German submariner visited Greenock recently to try to find details of his uncle who had been aboard a submarine sunk in the Firth of Clyde in 1940."

The German had emphasised that he was not referring to 'U-33', another U-boat which is recorded as being sunk off Arran on the same day.

Mr Graddon said it is believed some of the mystery sub sailors are buried in Greenock Cemetery, and that it is possible that a passenger on it was Otto Rahn, a German language specialist employed by the Nazis to find evidence of the Holy Grail and a so-called 'golden age' they were trying to recreate.

He said: "My book will be a biography of Rahn, who was born in 1904 and ostensibly died by suicide in 1939 on the orders of Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS.

"I have been researching Rahn's life for seven years after hearing about him and deciding he would make a fascinating book.

"The Nazis believed the Holy Grail could be in the form of written tablets containing universal truths of all-consuming knowledge and immortality."

Mr Graddon added that there could be a link with Roslin Chapel near Edinburgh, which is said to have a connection with the Grail.

Anyone who can help Mr Graddon can write to him at: PO Box 27, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, CF62 3YD.
