Well, according to script drafts, as well as what we saw in the movie, somehow there were 3 parts to the map to find the temple. Each of them had a piece of the map. I guess Indy didn't have a choice but to deal with them, as they each had a separate piece of the puzzle before the temple could be found. Regards. Michaelson
