It was over engineered, but it was an engineering/design mistake that created it's recognized swept 'gull' wing set back. They apparently miscalculated the center of gravity, with the original design to be a straight wing. Due to the air frame configuration, it was not possible to move the wings futher back on the fusulage to correct the mistake, they added an angled section between the body and the end of the wings, making the tips now at the CG of the body, but giving the plane a distinctive swept wing configuration. It was not a planned design, it was fixing a screw up, but man, didn't it make the plane a classic in it's final appearance?! Regards. Michaelson


: ...it had the reputation as being the "most over-engineered" plane of the 20th century. They beefed-up everything because they just did not know what the tolerances needed to be. As a result, they took one helluva beating and many are still flying today.
