Steven Spielberg Accepts Invitation to Visit Cuba Next Week to Attend 'The Films of Spielberg: A Festival in Cuba'

PR Newswire

Los Angeles — Steven Spielberg has accepted an invitation from the Cuban film institute (Instituto Cubano del Arte y Industria Cinematograficos) to visit Cuba next week for a nationwide festival, "The Films of Spielberg: A Festival in Cuba," during which eight of his films will be screened. The films will be presented for the Cuban public at four theaters in Havana and in video salons across the island. To kick off the festival, Spielberg will attend the Cuban premiere of his most recent film, Minority Report.

The other Spielberg films which will be shown in Cuba next week are E.T., Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire of the Sun, Jaws and Duel.

While in Cuba, Spielberg will visit the International School of Film and Television (EICTV), founded by Cuban filmmakers and legendary Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which trains students from Cuba, Latin America, and around the world in the filmmaking arts. He will also have a meeting with Cuban filmmakers. Other events on his schedule include a visit to Havana's main synagogue to meet the Jewish community, and a reception with U.S. diplomats and their families stationed in Havana.

"Steven Spielberg is a filmmaker whose work is well known and widely admired in Cuba, by filmmakers and audiences alike," said Omar Gonzalez, president of ICAIC. "We are honored that he has accepted our invitation to visit Cuba, and we look forward to sharing film making experiences with him, and showing him the great love that people in Cuba have of cinema."

"Steven was equally honored to receive such an invitation from the Cuban film institute," said Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy. "He has always said that film is a universal creative medium that can reach out to people across national boundaries and cultures. He is eager to meet with the filmmaking community and the Cuban public."

Among those accompanying Spielberg on the trip will be his wife, actress Kate Capshaw; Academy Award winning cinematographer and Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kaminski; and television director Jake Paltrow.

The trip has been authorized by the U.S. government's Office of Foreign Assets Control (U.S. Treasury Department) under a license granted for non- commercial film-related cultural exchange and exhibition activities.
