: What exactly are the regulations on downloading movies from the internet? Are they legal as long as you do not make a profit? Are they legal if you own the movies in another format, such as VHS or Beta? I was just curious. What about the ones on Ebay? Are they legal?

This interests me as well. If I have a CD and I copy it to a tape for use in my car, that is clearly legal. If I take a VHS tape and vidcap it and convert it into an MPG file and put it on a VCD for viewing in a laptop computer, it appears to be analagous, hence legal. What if, however, I don't own the technology to convert a video tape to an MPG file? Say someone on Kazaa has done the conversion for me. I download it and burn it to VCD. I own the VHS tape, so logically it should be legal, however, I'm not sure "the judge" sees it the same way.
