Richard Amsel was the artist behind 2 of the famous RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK posters. (I've mentioned him in some earlier posts here a long time ago.) His style made him one of the most popular and sought-after illustrators for film campaigns in the 70's and 80's.

Amsel did over 40 covers for TV GUIDE, and did the posters for films such as THE DARK CRYSTAL, MAD MAX III, THE SHOOTIST, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, THE STING, and CHINATOWN.

The new edition of ILLUSTRATORS ON AMERICA features a page on the artist and his work. Amsel -- who was actually several years younger than Drew Struzan -- scored a major film campaign (HELLO DOLLY) while still a student at art school in the late 60's.

In the 70's, while still in his twenties, Amsel's film poster artwork earned him a great deal of success, on par with the legendary Bob Peak.

(Sidenotes: The late Bob Peak created posters for APOCALYPSE NOW and STAR TREK I-V, among many others. You can find out more on an "official" website, www.bobpeak.com. Peak's son, Matthew, is also an accomplished illustrator/painter -- he did posters for A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, in a style very reminiscent of his father's. His website is www.mjpeak.com.)

Amsel's artwork for the 1982 reissue of RAIDERS is considered to be one of the most stylish campaigns ever created.

Alas, Amsel died around 1986 due to complications from AIDS, cutting short what was a brilliant and accomplished career.

Following his death, many of his works became highly sought collectors items. Christie's auctioned many Amsel illustrations to close his estate. If you're interested, a wonderful color catalogue retrospective can be found at the following link:
