League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is based on an exceptionally cool comics series by Alan Moore.

The League is composed of:

Alan Quatermain (from the Rider Haggard stories)
Mina Harker (from Bram Stoker's Dracula, of course)
Captain Nemo (Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues)
One Hawley Griffin, aka the Invisible Man (HG Welles)
Doctor Jekyll (and his hideous 'friend' Mr Hyde, from Robert Louis Stevenson)

It was a very cool series, and the first story arc pitted the League against one very fiendish Dr Fu-Manchu as well as the villainous Professor Moriarty.

There are numerous references to other literary characters contemporary to these. Holmes is mentioned, but from memory I think he was deceased in the comics.

The film, I believe, adds Tom Sawyer (?!) and Dorian Gray to the League.

Has the potential to be very cool. Also has the potential to suck royally. I'll be showing up to see it, either way.
